Education in the 21st Century is an engaged, multi-modal, disruptive, exciting, untidy exercise

Having come to teaching in my early thirties after careers in radio broadcasting and the fitness industry, I have a unique perspective on the job of the teacher. To me the classroom must be a place of vivid engagement, and more than a decade of working in the commercial world to attract audiences tells me that the teacher must accept the vital importance of engaging with the students’ intrinsic motivations.

Through the judicious and bold use of the modern web and social media, I believe I meet my students half-way in the job of ensuring their educational success. I believe that authenticity is an absolute key to success in the secondary school environment. This applies to everything. The relationships I develop with students must be honest, the work we do in the classroom must have an authentic context, purpose and audience, the feedback that I give must ‘ring true’ and I must be prepared to engage in the process of learning myself - explicitly in order to lead by example. I must learn from my students as they learn from me. I must also act in ways that are consistent with my expectations of them.

As to whether I have succeeded in this? Have a look through my work and that of my students, linked to from these pages, and you be the judge.
